Rivinus' notch, tympanic notch [rēvē′nəs] Etymology: Augustus Q. Rivinus, German anatomist, 1652-1723 a deficiency in the tympanic sulcus of the ear that forms an attachment for the flaccid part of the tympanic membrane and the mallear folds. Also called Rivinus' incisure , tympanic incisure. notch [noch] an indentation, especially one on the edge of a bone or other organ; called also incisure. aortic notch (dicrotic notch) a small downward deflection in the arterial pulse or pressure contour immediately following the closure of the semilunar valves, sometimes used as a marker for the end of systole or the ejection period. parotid notch the notch between the ramus of the mandible and the mastoid process of the temporal bones. Rivinus' notch (tympanic notch) a defect in the upper tympanic part of the temporal bone, filled by the upper portion of the tympanic membrane. Called also Rivinus' or tympanic incisure.
