turnover /turn·over/ (tern´o-ver) the movement of something into, through, and out of a place; the rate at which a thing is depleted and replaced. erythrocyte iron turnover (EIT) the rate at which iron moves from the bone marrow into circulating red cells. plasma iron turnover (PIT) the rate at which iron moves from the blood plasma to the bone marrow or other tissues. turnover the total of movement of an element or other body constituent in a given time, regardless of the gain or loss of the component. iron turnover much of the body's iron store is fixed in intracellular sites and is not available metabolically. The portion of the iron store that is available for mobilization into new sites is called the labile iron pool and may undergo a good deal of metabolic activity. turnover number see catalytic constant.
