breeding value

the sum of gene effects of a breeding animal as measured by the performance of its progeny.

aggregate breeding value

see true breeding value (below).

estimated breeding value

an estimate of the ability of an individual to produce superior offspring; based on one or more measurements of performance, using phenotypic values, taken on the animal itself or, more commonly, on a number of its relatives.

true breeding value

genetic merit of an individual which can be conceptually defined as twice the average deviation of its offspring from the population mean when mated randomly to an infinite population.

true overall breeding value

the true, overall breeding value arrived at by the addition of the true breeding values for each selection objective with each true breeding value multiplied by the relevant net economic value.
