clinical trial  an experiment performed on human beings in order to evaluate the comparative efficacy of two or more therapies.

trial,
n an examination before a competent tribunal of the facts or law in issue in a cause of action for the purpose of determining the issue.

trial
experiment; refers usually to the trying out of a substance or a material in order to determine its effect. The trial may be a blind experiment, a clinical trial, a double blind trial or a pilot trial.

clinical trial, therapeutic trial
a test which uses patients as test objects for a drug regimen, a physical procedure, the results being compared with those in patients receiving a placebo or an alternative treatment.
