Q. What are the chances that chronic depression leads to schizophrenia? Someone close to me has been battling depression for 17 years now. She is doing a good job, has held on to a demanding job for 4 years now. Though her performance at work are highly erratic. Periods of poor apathetic performance interspersed with periods of high performance. She shows symptoms of chronic depression, withdraws from social life, has low energy, can spend days in bed, is messy etc. She's on medication too. I fear that the next phase will be schizophrenia

A. Depression doesn't lead to schizophrenia.It occurs if someone is genetically exposed to develope this disease (around 1% of the total population, or higher if someone in the family is schizophrenic). As opposed to the as many as 16% of the general population that experience a major depression episode.

Q. What are the chances of getting breast cancer as a 15 years old? Recently i have noticed a lump in my breast like on the left side of my nipple. It has never been there before and i am freaking out that i have breast cancer. Please help me.

A. I'm not a Doctor but I do know from experience that women have lumpy breast tissue now an then. Your breast are lumpier just before a period. All due to hormonal surges during that time. After your period is over do a breast exam again. It should feel less lumpy or swollen if the lumps feel hard or if you have discharge from the nipple you may want to see a Doctor

Q. What are the chances of pregnancy even when a man uses a condom? i'm not sexually active, just sexually curious if you will. is there a statistic any where? what are the chances of pregnancy even if a man uses a condom, and what factors affect those chances? thanks.

A. Condoms are 93-97% effective when used properly. So your chances are 3-7%. If the condom breaks, has a hole, or comes off, obviously your chances increase, but none of those senarios are built into the 3-7%.
