Toluidine Blue

blue (bloo)
1. a color between green and indigo, produced by energy with wavelengths between 420 and 490 nm.
2. a dye or stain with this color.

aniline blue  a mixture of the trisulfonates of triphenyl rosaniline and of diphenyl rosaniline.
brilliant cresyl blue  an oxazin dye, usually C15H16N3OCl, used in staining blood.
methylene blue  dark green crystals or crystalline powder with a bronzelike luster; used in the treatment of methemoglobinemia and of cyanide poisoning, and as a bacteriologic stain and an indicator.
Prussian blue  an amorphous blue powder, Fe4[Fe(CN)6]3, used as a stain.
toluidine blue , toluidine blue O the chloride salt or zinc chloride double salt of aminodimethylaminotoluphenazthionium chloride; useful as a stain for demonstrating basophilic and metachromatic substances.

Toluidine Blue
A toxic metachromatic thiazine dye used to stain ‘thick’ sections for electron microscopy, which may cause haematuria due to haemorrhagic cystitis and methaemoglobulinuria. Toluidine blue should be avoided by patients with glucose-6-phosphate deficiency, given their risk of haemolytic anaemia

toluidine blue
an antiheparin compound, used also as a biological stain. Called also tolonium chloride.

toluidine blue test
a screening test for mucopolysaccharidosis, e.g. Hurler's syndrome; filter paper impregnated with toluidine blue turns blue when moistened with urine containing excessive amounts of chondroitin sulfuric acid.

The current study indicates that routine use of this toluidine blue test could significantly improve rates of early detection, particularly by general practitioners who lack the experience of oral cancer specialists.
