tolnaftate /tol·naf·tate/ (tol-naf´tāt) a synthetic topical antifungal, used in the treatment of tinea. tolnaftate [tolnaf′tāt] an antifungal agent. indications It is prescribed in the treatment of superficial fungus infections of the skin, including tinea pedis, tinea cruris, tinea corporis, and tinea versicolor. contraindications Known hypersensitivity to this drug prohibits its use. It is also not indicated for nail or scalp infections. adverse effects Among the more common adverse effects are hypersensitivity reactions and mild irritation of the skin. tolnaftate (topical), n brand name: Aftate, Tinactin, Ting, others; drug class: antifungal, topical; action: interferes with fungal cell membrane, which increases permeability and leaking of cell nutrients; uses: treatment of tinea pedis, tinea cruris, tinea corporis, tinea capitis, tinea unguium, and tinea versicolor. tolnaftate a topical antifungal agent.
