dentine

one of the hard tissues of the teeth which constitutes most of its bulk. Lies between the pulp cavity and the enamel, and where it is not covered by enamel is covered by cementum, the third hard substance of the tooth.

sclerotic dentine

a dense clear dentine formed when the dentinal tubules are filled with mineralized material.

secondary dentine

dentine laid down in later development of a tooth, helping to avoid the exposure of the tooth pulp. It is often pigmented and is responsible for the appearance of the dental star.

tertiary dentine

produced in response to irritation of odontoblastic processes. Called also reparative dentine.
