dystonia musculo´rum defor´mans  a hereditary disorder marked by involuntary, irregular, clonic contortions of the muscles of the trunk and limbs, which twist the body forward and sideways grotesquely.

A movement disorder characterized by sustained muscle contractions that result in writhing or twisting movements and unsual body postures.

Etymology: Gk, dys + tonos, tone
any impairment of muscle tone. The condition commonly involves the head, neck, and tongue and often occurs as an adverse effect of a medication.

Neurology Involuntary, often acute movement and prolonged contraction of one or more muscles, resulting in twisting body motions, tremor, and abnormal posture Etiology Inherited, ↑ during voluntary movement, nervousness, and emotional stress; dystonias may affect the extrapyramidal system–despite lack of demonstrable lesions, task specific–eg, writer's cramp or associated with medications–especially antipsychotics or disease–eg, a form of lung cancer Location Tongue, jaw, eyes, neck, trunk, extremities, occasionally the whole body Management Dopamine, sedatives–benzodiazepines–eg diazepam, anticholinergics–eg, trihexyphenidyl, benztropine–which cause dry mouth, mydriasis, urinary retention, and visual hallucinations; surgery. Olanzapine has been used in various movement disorders: choreic syndromes [Huntington's disease (HD), hemichorea] (1,4,5,6,7), tardive dystonia (8,9,10), tardive dyskinesia (9,11,12), hemiballismus (13), dystonia (14,15), and essential tremor (16,17).
The impact ranges from unpleasant in mild cases of tardive dyskinesia to "hugely life altering" in people who develop tardive dystonia on the older drugs.
