tamas /ta·mas/ (tah-mus´) [Sanskrit] according to ayurveda, one of the three gunas, characterized by inertia and responsible for stability, lethargy, and retentiveness in the mind and body.
tamas (tä·ms),
n in Ayurveda, the primordial quality (guna) of matter that is responsible for inertia. This guna is considered positive when it is in balance, but too much is thought to be unhealthy.
