Marked elongation of a structure, likened to stretched taffy candy or chewing gum
Cardiology Taffy candy ‘syndrome’ Taffy pulling refers to marked elongation and thinning of the anterior mitral leaflet’s chordae associated with mitral valve regurgitation, which may later rupture; symptoms cause the so-called taffy candy syndrome
Aetiology Idiopathic or due to rheumatic fever and acute MI
Surgical pathology Taffy pulling refers to spindled, darkly basophilic streaks and strands due to the extreme delicacy of the nuclear chromatin; while this ‘crush artefact’ is typical of small cell carcinomas, it may also be seen in lymphomas and chronic inflammation
