sutura /su·tu·ra/ (soo-tu´rah) pl. sutu´rae [L.] suture; in anatomy, a type of joint in which the apposed bony surfaces are united by fibrous tissue, permitting no movement; found only between bones of the skull. sutura denta´ta s. serrata. sutura pla´na a type in which there is simple apposition of the contiguous surfaces, with no interlocking of the edges of the participating bones. sutura serra´ta a type in which the participating bones are united by interlocking processes resembling the teeth of a saw. sutura squamo´sa a type formed by overlapping of the broad beveled edges of the participating bones. sutura ve´ra sutura. sutura dentata, an immovable fibrous joint that is one kind of true suture in which toothlike processes interlock along the margins of connecting bones of the skull.
