survey, vertical bite-wing,
n a series of oral radiographs in which the teeth are viewed and recorded from a series of positions: the
molar position, where the film is positioned approximately over the center of the second molar on each side of the oral cavity;
premolar, where the film is positioned over the mandibular premolar teeth on each side;
anterior, where the film is centered between the canine and lateral teeth; and
central bite-wing, where the film is placed at the midline.

survey
a comprehensive examination of an area or population for a particular purpose. The survey may be of a part, e.g. cross-sectional survey, or for a particular end-result, e.g. a prevalence survey, or by the use of a particular method, e.g. aerial survey, or a combination of these, e.g. seroepidemiological.

survey radiograph
a plain radiograph of a large area before embarking on a special radiographic technique for achieving special results. Called also scout radiography.
