surgical ligature,

the exposure of an unerupted tooth by placing a metal ligature around its cervix. The free ends of the ligature are fixed to a fine precious-metal chain attached to an orthodontic appliance. These components act together to produce traction on the unerupted tooth and force it through the gingival tissues.
