Axons of supraoptic and paraventricular nuclei of the hypothalamus traverse the infundibular stalk and extend into the neurohypophysis.
Immunohisto-chemical analysis revealed a significant increase of Fos immunopositive cells, an indication of neuronal activation, in the paraventricular nucleus of the hypothalamus (PVN), central nucleus of the amygdala (CeA), periaqueductal grey (PAG), and supraoptic nucleus (SON) of saline-pretreated, morphine-dependent animals compared to saline-pretreated, butorphanol-dependent animals.
For comparison, we quantified ER-[beta] cell number in another hypothalamic region, the supraoptic nucleus (SON).
