sulfadiazine /sul·fa·di·a·zine/ (-di´ah-zēn) a sulfonamide antibacterial, used as the base or the sodium salt in the treatment of infections including nocardiosis, toxoplasmosis, otitis media, and chloroquine-resistant falciparum malaria. See also under silver.

sulfADIAZINE
[sul′fədī′əzēn]
a sulfonamide antibacterial.
indications It is prescribed in the treatment of infection, particularly of the urinary tract, and in rheumatic fever prophylaxis.
contraindications Porphyria, urinary tract obstruction, or known hypersensitivity to sulfonamides prohibits its use.
adverse effects Among the more serious adverse effects are crystalluria, photosensitivity, severe allergic reactions, and blood dyscrasias.

sulfadiazine [sul″fah-di´ah-zēn]
a sulfonamide used, frequently in combination with other sulfonamides, in the treatment of infections due to susceptible organisms, including nocardiosis, toxoplasmosis, otitis media caused by susceptible strains of Haemophilus influenzae,streptococci, and pneumococci, and malaria caused by chloroquine-resistant Plasmodium falciparum. It is administered orally as the base or intravenously as the sodium salt. See also silver sulfadiazine.
