An injectable general anesthetic with narcotic action.

sufentanil citrate
[sufen′tənil]
an analgesic and anesthetic.
indications It is administered intravenously as an adjunct to general anesthesia and can be used in higher amounts together with 100% oxygen as a primary anesthetic.
contraindications Hypersensitivity to sufentanil prohibits its use. It should be used with caution in people with respiratory depression or renal, hepatic, or pulmonary failure.
adverse effects Among the more serious adverse effects are respiratory depression, chest wall rigidity, hypotension, bradycardia, and nausea and vomiting. There must be ready availability of drugs and equipment needed to treat such adverse effects.
