caruncle

caruncle /car·un·cle/ (kar´ung-k'l) a small fleshy eminence, often abnormal.
hymenal caruncles  small elevations of the mucous membrane around the vaginal opening, being relics of the torn hymen.
lacrimal caruncle  the red eminence at the medial angle of the eye.
myrtiform caruncles  hymenal caruncles.
sublingual caruncle  an eminence on either side of the frenulum of the tongue, on which the major sublingual duct and the submandibular duct open.
urethral caruncle  a polypoid, deep red growth on the mucous membrane of the urinary meatus in women.

Etymology: L, caruncula, small piece of flesh
a small fleshy projection, such as one of the lacrimal caruncles at the inner canthus of the eye or the hymenal caruncles that are the hymenal remnants. Also called caruncula.

fleshy masses on the wall of the uterus of pregnant ruminants. The placenta is attached only at these points. There are about 100 of them and they are very much smaller in the nonpregnant female.
