mastectomy /mas·tec·to·my/ (mast-ek´tah-me) excision of the breast. modified radical mastectomy total mastectomy with axial node dissection, but leaving the pectoral muscles intact. radical mastectomy amputation of the breast with wide excision of the pectoral muscles and axillary lymph nodes. subcutaneous mastectomy excision of breast tissue with preservation of overlying skin, nipple, and areola so that the breast form may be reconstructed.
subcutaneous mastectomy, a surgical procedure in which all of the breast tissue of one or both breasts is removed, leaving the skin, areola, and nipple intact. The adjacent lymph nodes, pectoralis major, and pectoralis minor are not removed. It may be performed on women who are at great risk of development of breast cancer. Reconstruction of the breasts is performed, with the assistance of a plastic surgeon, through the insertion of prostheses to return the normal contour to the breasts. subcutaneous mastectomy Breast surgery Surgery in which up to 95% of the breast is removed without disturbing the skin and nipple; once the native tissue is removed, an implant is placed in the defect.
