stroboscope An instrument that produces brief flashes of illumination at a variable frequency. The frequency can be synchronized or asynchronized with the frequency of a moving object, which can be made to appear stationary, to rotate slowly or to rotate in the opposite direction to its real rotation. This apparent change of motion or immobilization of an object, when the object is illuminated by a periodically varying light of appropriate frequency, is called a stroboscopic effect. Stroboscopes have various uses in medicine, industry (e.g. to study the stresses of machine parts in motion), scientific research, etc. See stroboscopic movements. How to thank TFD for its existence?
