Streptomyces

Streptomyces /Strep·to·my·ces/ (strep″to-mi´sēz) a genus of bacteria (order Actinomycetales), usually soil forms, but occasionally parasitic on plants and animals, and notable as the source of various antibiotics, e.g., the tetracyclines. S. somalien´sis is a cause of mycetoma.

Streptomyces produces an antibiotic that normally kills other bacteria, but in one of the experimental test tubes, Rhodococcus started producing its own antibiotic, which wiped out the Streptomyces.
It is produced from a culture of Streptomyces natalensis and acts as an effective inhibitor of moulds.
