strain/counterstrain (SCS) (strān/kawn·ter·strān),
n soft-tissue manipulation technique in which the practitioner seeks to locate and alleviate nonradiating tender points in the patient's myofascial structures. The practitioner positions dysfunctional tissue at a point of balance in a direction opposite the restrictive barrier. The position of ease is held for 90 seconds, after which the patient is gently returned to the original position where the tender point is rechecked. Also called
positional release therapy.
