arteriole /ar·te·ri·ole/ (ahr-tēr´e-ōl) a minute arterial branch.arterio´lar afferent glomerular arteriole a branch of an interlobular artery that goes to a renal glomerulus. efferent glomerular arteriole one arising from a renal glomerulus, breaking up into capillaries to supply renal tubules. postglomerular arteriole efferent glomerular a. precapillary arteriole arterial capillary. preglomerular arteriole afferent glomerular a. straight arterioles of kidney branches of the arcuate arteries of the kidney arising from the efferent glomerular arterioles and passing down to the renal pyramids.
Arteriole The smallest type of artery. Mentioned in: Raynaud's Disease arteriole [ärtir′ē·ōl] Etymology: L, arteriola, little artery the smallest of the arteries. Blood flowing from the heart is pumped through the arteries, to the arterioles, to the capillaries, into the veins, and returned to the heart. The muscular walls of the arterioles constrict and dilate in response to both local factors and neurochemical stimuli; thus, arterioles play a significant role in peripheral vascular resistance and in regulation of blood pressure. Also called arteriola.
