1. to extend over or across, to be on both sides.
2. to have one leg on each opposite side of something.

McFerrin has been described as a universal genius, vocal artist, conductor, straddler of musical worlds and styles; but he truly has to be seen and heard in person, to be recognised as one of modern day music's most exciting live performers.
In the other drawing, the straddler is more a tomboy who, at some awkward pubescent stage in which kissing is an embarrassment, wrestles the object of her affection to the ground (here the viewer is akin to a rival).
By the 1972 Olympics, most of the jumpers were floppers, and by 1976 there were not many straddlers at all.
