steal (stēl) diversion, as of blood flow, of something from its normal course, as in occlusive arterial disease. subclavian steal in occlusive disease of the subclavian artery, a reversal of blood flow in the ipsilateral vertebral artery from the basilar artery to the subclavian artery beyond the point of occlusion.
