Q. Does steroids make children shorter? My 10 years-old son has asthma, and is treated with a steroid inhaler. Will this treatment cause him to be shorter in the future?

A. Lower doses of inhaled steroids were generally found to have a smaller effect on growth.
However, it seems that there is compensation for the growth delay, for example by growing for longer periods, so that the long term effect is apparently minimal.

Q. Any suggestions for coping with asthma in 5 year old? My daughter has asthma. It comes on when she has a cold or an ear or throat infection. I had to give her a liquid steroid last night as she had asthma really badly, the trouble is the steroid makes her so hyper-active, jumping off lounges and running around etc. It drives me crazy because she really needs to rest. A. hi whiteh,i am a retired respiratory therapist,depending on how bad your child is with her attacks will determine what types of meds work for her steroids are given for bad asthma an it might be the only thing that works good for her,her dr knows best.if your child has a regular dr. get a pulmonary specialist for her.----also steroids should NOT BE STOPPED right AWAY if your child has been on high doses this can cause her to have a bad attack.---mrfoot56

Q. How long steroids takes for me to build my muscles? I am very much eager to go for muscle building. I feel that if I take steroids then it is a better option to build good muscle cuts. A. brandon is right,even in pulmonary medicine,steroids are used as a last try,in breaking a asthmatic attack,,,,the one thing i know it does,in simple terms,is take all the calcium out of your bones......mrfoot56
