staff (staf) 1. a wooden rod or rodlike structure. 2. a grooved director used as a guide for the knife in surgery. 3. the professional personnel of a hospital. staff of Aesculapius the rod or staff with entwining snake, symbolic of the god of healing, official insignia of the American Medical Association.
