a gelatinous membrane supported by the stereocilia of the hair cells of the maculae of the saccule and utriculus of the inner ear; adhering to the surface are numerous crystalline particles called otoliths (statoconia).

part of each otolithic organ; the hair cells in the organ carry stereocilia which project from the hairs and into the statoconial membrane which is covered with otoliths.
