stanine

stanine (stā´nīn),
n a unit consisting of one-ninth of the total range of the standard scores (SDs) of a normal distribution. The term is a condensation of “standard nine.” The mean falls at 5, the SD at ±2. The stanine was developed by the U.S. Air Force and is used to report scores on the Dental Aptitude Test.

Another disadvantage of stanines is that because the groups are relatively large and all stanines are integers, two scores in a single stanine are sometimes farther apart than two scores in adjacent stanines.
Fish consumption of more than once per week compared to less than once per week was associated with higher stanine scores in combined intelligence, in verbal performance, and in visuospatial performance.
Examination of performance in stanine clusters reveals that at pretest, 75 students (69 percent) in the treatment group scored in the first three stanines, and no student scored in the highest three stanines.
