Yorkshire Water said it had 87 confirmed incidents of illegal standpipe use in West Yorkshire between January and July this year against just 20 for the same period last year.
The affected pipe is a private main, not a Severn Trent Water asset, but as a temporary measure Severn Trent has provided a standpipe at Chiswell Road so that residents have a fresh water supply until the repairs are made by the contractor.
Although the building had no sprinklers, it did have a standpipe system that included an exterior fire department connection.
