stanchion
a specially designed headgate to hold an animal in place while allowing feeding and resting. Most commonly used for cattle.

stanchion housing
an older system where cows are tied in for the winter in head-locks of wood or metal and have a confined space in which to lie but feed troughs and water bowls are at the front of the stall and a gutter, nowadays fitted with a mechanical dung remover for the collection of manure and urine.
