1. A chronic disease that is characterized by diarrhea, steatorrhea, emaciation, and anemia, caused by defective absorption of nutrients from the intestinal tract. Also called psilosis.

2. Wax or metal used to form the pathway for forcing molten metal into a mold in the making of a dental casting.

Sprue

A disorder of impaired absorption of nutrients from the diet by the small intestine (malabsorption), resulting in malnutrition. Two forms of sprue exist: tropical sprue, which occurs mainly in tropical regions; and celiac sprue, which occurs more widely and is due to sensitivity to the wheat protein gluten.

a chronic degenerative disorder resulting from malabsorption of nutrients from the small intestine and characterized by a broad range of symptoms, including diarrhea; weakness; weight loss; poor appetite; pallor; muscle cramps; bone pain; ulceration of the mucous membrane lining the digestive tract; and a smooth, shiny tongue. It occurs in both tropical and nontropical forms and affects both children and adults. Also called catarrhal dysentery. sprue

a chronic form of malabsorption syndrome in humans occurring in two forms, tropical, which is associated with ingestion of gluten-containing foods (called also celiac disease), and nontropical. Malabsorption syndromes in dogs are sometimes compared with, but are not identical with, sprue.
