sporogony /spo·rog·o·ny/ (spo-rog´ah-ne) sporulation involving multiple fission of a sporont, resulting in the formation of sporocysts and sporozoites.sporogon´ic
sporogony [spôrog′ənē] Etymology: Gk, sporos + genesis, origin reproduction by means of spores. It refers specifically to the formation of sporozoites during the sexual stage of the life cycle of a sporozoon, primarily the malarial parasite Plasmodium. Fusion of the sex cells occurs in the body of the invertebrate host, the female Anopheles mosquito in the case of Plasmodium, where the encysted zygote undergoes multiple division, giving rise to the sporozoites. Compare schizogony. sporogony [spŏ-rog´ah-ne] the sexual stage in the life cycle of a sporozoan parasite, with development of the zygote into one or several haploid spores, each containing a distinctive number of sporozoites. adj., adj sporogon´ic.
sporogony an asexual stage in the life cycle of an apicomplexan parasite, with development of sporocysts and sporozoites within the oocysts. The oocysts are extraintestinal (e.g. Eimeria, Isospora), or intraintestinal (Sarcocystis, Cryptosporidium). Want to thank TFD for its existence?
