Etymology: L, spiritus, breath; Ammon, temple in Libya
a solution of 3% ammonium carbonate in alcohol with flavorings added. It is mixed with water for use as a stimulant and carminative.

spirit of ammonia

A pungent solution of approx. 4% ammonium carbonate in 70% alcohol flavored with lemon, lavender, and myristica oil. It is used to elicit reflex stimulation of respiration and as smelling salts to stimulate patients who have fainted.
