sphingomyelinosis
an inherited deficiency of sphingomyelinase in cats, dogs and mice that results in abnormal accumulation of sphingomyelin in nervous tissue, liver and spleen. Clinical signs include retarded growth and neurological abnormalities from an early age. The disease in cats and miniature poodles closely resembles Niemann-Pick disease of humans. Called also sphingomyelin lipidosis.
