The witness should be board-certified by a specialty board recognized by the American Board of Medical Specialties at the time of the incident and qualified in the subject of the case.
To protect the citizenry, one would perhaps expect a protocol for retesting all licensed physicians every 10 years, with such testing being offered as part of a specialty board recertification examination.
As a board certified family physician, and as a recently appointed clinical assistant professor of family medicine at Oregon Health and Science University, I not only pride myself on remaining up to date on clinical medicine, I am required to demonstrate that knowledge every seven years on a specialty board exam.
