sodium thiosulphate

A drug used to treat cyanide poisoning in conjunction with sodium nitrite. Sodium nitrite produces methaemoglobinaemia and the cyanide ions convert methaemoglobin to cyanmethaemoglobin. As this slowly dissociates, the thiosulphate converts it to non-toxic thiocyanate which is excreted in the urine. The drug is on the WHO official list.
