the biggest and strongest of the anthropoid apes; Gorilla gorilla of the family Pongidae. Up to 6 ft tall and 500 lb, mostly terrestrial, fruit-eating primate, with a ferocious appearance but gentle nature if unprovoked and a legendary involvement with human adventure. Include G. g. beringei, the mountain gorilla.
