silicone rubber 
A polymeric elastomeric, transparent material that is used in the manufacture of silicone rubber contact lenses. It has very high oxygen permeability but it is also very hydrophobic (wetting angle greater than 90º). The surfaces must be specially treated to render them wettable. A silicone component is used in silicone hydrogel and gas permeable contact lenses. Syn. poly(dimethyl siloxane).
