shuttle science

Basic research
A popular term for research in which materials are prepared in small or more poorly equipped labs, and shuttled to well-equiped labs that perform the more costly parts of the experiment (e.g., magnetic resonance spectroscopy or X-ray crystallography).

Space medicine
Any research carried out with the aid of NASA’s space shuttles—most of which were related to microgravity (e.g., growth of protein crystals and virulence of bacteria).

SPACEHAB modules, which have supported five Shuttle science missions and seven cargo-delivery missions to the Russian space station Mir, already are slated for use on the first two ISS re-supply flights.
Other space industry leaders say NASA officials are forgetting the facts of the pre-Challenger science program in the planning of future shuttle science objectives.
But the Spacelab module made it into orbit only three times from 1983 to 1986, forcing experimenters to use the middeck for most shuttle science.
Still, NASA and private companies promised incredible, almost immediate, cash returns from shuttle science.
Even if the orbiter were being launched on a monthly basis, CSP officials now say companies cannot expect any returns from shuttle science until well beyond 2000.
