short saphenous vein

A superficial leg vein that begins in the venous plexus that drains the lateral side of the foot. The short saphenous vein ascends the lateral side of the posterior leg (the calf). Nearing the knee, the vein runs in the midline between the heads of the gastrocnemius muscle and through the popliteal fossa.
