shimming

An MRI term for improving field homogeneity by compensating for imbalances in the main magnetic field of an MR scanner, which can be accomplished by combining passive (mechanical) shimming—e.g., by adding or removing steel from the magnet’s poles—and active shimming (with shim coils) to fine-tune the magnetic field.
