shield Etymology: AS, scild a material for preventing or reducing the passage of charged particles or radiation. A shield may be designated by the radiation it is intended to absorb, such as a gamma ray shield, or by to the kind of protection it is intended to give, such as a background, biologic, or thermal shield.
