senior sister

A nurse in the UK who is at the top of ward and department hierarchy, and may work in sections of hospital (e.g., A&E, ITU) where all nurses are senior and quasi-autonomous in their roles. Senior sisters are usually at pay band 7 to 8c under the Agenda for Change, which corresponds to G or H grade under the Whitley system (which was officially retired in 2004 but may still be used in the working parlance).
