Acquired aplastic anemia Hematology A failure of hematopoiesis in the BM caused by stem cell injury, resulting in a reduction in all types of blood cells: ↓ RBCs, ↓ WBCs, ↓ platelets–ie, pancytopenia Etiology Chemotherapy, immunosuppressants, RT, myelotoxins–eg, benzene or arsenic, drugs, pregnancy, congenital disorders, hepatitis, SLE, idiopathic Clinical Anemia–fatigue, weakness; neutropenia–↑ infection; thrombocytopenia–↑ mucocutaneous and internal organ hemorrhage; SAA may be acute or chronic and usually progresses.
