schistosomiasis /schis·to·so·mi·a·sis/ (shis″-) (skis″to-so-mi´ah-sis) infection with Schistosoma.
schistosomiasis haemato´bia  urinary s.
schistosomiasis intercala´tum  an endemic intestinal disease of Central Africa due to infection with Schistosoma intercalatum, with abdominal pain, diarrhea, and other intestinal symptoms.
intestinal schistosomiasis  the chronic form of schistosomiasis mansoni and japonica in which the intestinal tract is involved; usually asymptomatic.
schistosomiasis japo´nica  infection with Schistosoma japonica. The acute form is marked by fever, allergic symptoms, and diarrhea; chronic effects, which may be severe, are due to fibrosis around eggs deposited in the liver, lungs, and central nervous system.
schistosomiasis manso´ni  infection with Schistosoma mansoni, living chiefly in the mesenteric veins but migrating to deposit eggs in venules, primarily of the large intestine; eggs lodging in the liver may lead to peripheral fibrosis, hepatosplenomegaly, and ascites.
urinary schistosomiasis , vesical schistosomiasis infection with Schistosoma haematobium involving the urinary tract and causing cystitis and hematuria.

Infection of the liver and large intestine with Schistosoma mansoni, characterized by irritation, inflammation, and ultimately formation of fibrous tissue. Also called Manson's disease.
