rut
the period of increased sexual activity occurring in the autumn (fall) in some male mammals, especially deer and elephants. It is accompanied by increased testicular activity, especially spermatogenesis, and in deer by shedding of the antlers and a marked increase in vocalizing and aggression. The vocalizing is a distinctive deep roar known as 'the rut'. The aggressive actions have the effect of keeping attending females close and competing males at a distance.

In his affairs, too, Cooper was every bit as thoughtful as he was ruttish.
is translated as "and became ruttish in response to the embraces" (93), a rendition which nicely communicates the goatherd's sexual excitement, as well as assimilating it to that of the billy-goats described a few lines earlier, and paving the way for Daphnis' goat-sex mimesis; however, while the goats may get their oats, poor Daphnis is again left wanting.
The letters continuously resist--try to resist, then yield (and yield, baby) to descriptions of ruttish nymphs who want nothing more than a shameless romp with a European.
