A radioactive synthetic element whose longest-lived isotopes haved mass numbers of 253, 255, 257, and 259 with half-lives of 1.8, 1.6, 4.7, and 3.4 seconds. Atomic number 104.

Etymology: Sir Ernest Rutherford, British physicist, 1871-1937
a synthetic transuranic element. Its atomic number is 104, and its atomic mass is 261.
