runner's toe

painful, black discoloration at the base of the toe nail, usually the result of inappropriate footwear (too small or too wide) or direct trauma. A significant amount of blood gathering under the toenail may form a subungual haematoma which may require immediate release from its pressurized space by a sterile, heated needle.
