a soft metallic element of the alkali metals group. Its atomic number is 37, and its atomic mass is 85.47. Slightly radioactive, it is used in radioisotope scanning.

According to a report in National Geographic News, in a new technique, Martin Weitz and Ulrich Vogl of the University of Bonn in Germany used a laser to bring the temperature of dense rubidium gas far below the normal point at which the gas becomes a solid.
The Rydberg molecules in question were formed from two atoms of rubidium - one a Rydberg atom, and one a normal atom.
Hallmarks of an exotic, predicted state of matter called a supersolid have been spotted in a gas of ultracold rubidium atoms.
